(Tombstone and obituary give his birth year as 1833, but pension records have his birth year as 1834.)

Thomas Chelton Friend was the son of William Friend (1804 - 1862) and Elizabeth Chism (1820 - 1853). His mother was thirteen years old when he was born. *According to Kentucky marriage record for his parents, his mother was 12 years old when she married William Friend. *(Add'l info provided by: James Craft)

Thomas Friend was a Civil War Veteran according to the "1890 Veterans Schedules for Oklahoma and Indian Territory> Oklahoma> Edmond; Special Schedule of Surviving Soldier, Sailors, and Marines, Widows, etc. who served in during the "War of the Rebellion" -- He enlisted March 18, 1862 and was discharged April 2, 1865 after serving "3 years and 19 days"--He was a Corporal in Company D, 4 MSM.

Thomas Friend married Malinda Lowry Filbert on March 16, 1854 in Worth Co., Missouri. She died in 1897. He then married Marilla Fast Moran in 1900. She was the widow of John Moran (1849–1899).

Thomas and Malinda's children were all born in Missouri:

1. Elizabeth Ann

2. Mary Jane Friend (who married Andrew Francis Milligan)

3. Charles Matthews Friend who married Florence McCullon, b. 1871 in Arkansas--d. after 1890 in Deep Fork Township, O.T). Their child Ellen was born in 1889).

4. Henrietta Isabelle "Hattie" Friend B 11-27-1862 Gentry Co. Mo. (She married (1) Willard P Sweat who was the son of Hiram Perkins Sweat and Lutitia Nichols Sweat) and (2) James H Jordan

5. William Lincoln Friend (who married Sarah Roseline Keel)

6. Lyda Permelia Melvina "Mellie" Friend (who married Richard Franklin Atteberry 9-6-1891)

7. Sarah Loellen Friend (who married (1)Harvey Ellis Ruble and (2)Gust Pikos)

8. Miranda Louisa Friend

Death Of T. C. FRIEND
"Thomas C. Friend, one of the few 89ers left in this section, died June 8 at the home of his daughter Mrs. R. F. ATTEBERRY on Coon Creek northwest of Luther. He was 87 years old. Funeral services were held the evening of his death, burial being made in the family burying ground on Coon Creek.
Thomas C. Friend was born in Kentucky, May 18, 1833, and lived there until manhood. He then moved to Howard County,Mo. He was united in marriage to Malinda L. FILBERT, March 15, 1854, and to this union was born nine children, three boys and six girls. He served in the Civil war 3 years and 6 months. His wife was called to rest August 8, 1897.
He later united in marriage to Marrilla MARAN, August 12, 1900, and she was called to rest March 11, 1919. He has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Frank ATTEBERRY, since the death of his wife. Departed this life June 10, 1920 at the age of 87 years and 23 days.
His children living are as follows: Mrs. R. F. Atteberry of near Luther; Mrs. H. E. RUBLE of Arcadia; Mrs. Willard SWEAT of Idaho; Charles Friend of Pratt, Kas., and William Friend, who lives over in the Creek country.
He united with the Church of God at Alanthus, Mo, 1886 and always has lived a true christian, a devoted husband, a kind and loving father."
