Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Saturday, July 8, 1933, page 1:
Joseph Slemmer, 78, farmer and coal miner, of Edwardsville Township, died at his home at 5 p.m. yesterday of pneumonia. He had been in ill health for eleven years.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at his residence, with William Snadjr, affiliated with the C.S.P.S., a Bohemian lodge of Edwardsville, in charge of the services. Burial will be in the Buck Road Cemetery.
Mr. Slemmer was born January 30, 1855, in Bohemia. He married Miss Mary Sedlacek May 30, 1898, in Bohemia. They came to America 27 years ago and had resided in Madison County since that time. He was a member of the Progressive Miners' Union No. 80 in Glen Carbon.
Surviving besides his widow are the following children: Mrs. Anton Shimunek, Edwardsville, Frank Slemer, St. Louis, Mrs. Steve Ontko, Edwardsville Township, Mrs. Rudolph Doca, St. Louis, Misses Lena, Barbara, Rose, Mildred and Helen Slemmer, who reside at home. He also leaves a brother, William Slemer of Glen Carbon, one sister, Mrs. Mary Slovak of Edwardsville Township, and seven grandchildren.
