Thomas Ward was a weaver by trade in England and when coming to America he wasn’t aloud to do the same trade in manufacturing goods. It is said that he smuggled in one of the first looms into the Northwest Territory. Thomas and Mary had Matilda the first to have been born in America on March 7, 1820. They settled near Big Island in Marion County in the summer of 1834. Thomas and Mary died in summer of 1835 along with their daughter Mary and are buried at Union Cemetery in Marion County.
