Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in London, England, he served as a Commander in the Royal Navy. On October 11, 1855, in the Sea of Azov, Crimea, Commander Commerell was an officer of the ship HMS Weser, when he went with a Quartermaster and a Seaman to destroy large quantities of forage on the shore of the Sivash. After a difficult and dangerous journey they reached their objective and managed to ignite the fodder stacks. The shore guards were alerted and immediately opened fire and gave chase. The pursuit was hot and although the three men were fatigued, they finally reached their ship and later the look-outs reported that the fodder store had burned to the ground. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on February 24, 1857. Remaining in the Royal Navy, he later achived the rank of Admiral Commander in Chief of the North America and West Indies Stations, retiring in 1891. He died at age 72 in Hyde Park, England.
