The son of John & Nancy (Landis) Whisler, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Lower Swatra Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 9" tall with light hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Middletown, Dauphin County, August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.

He married Ellen C. Stipe December 14, 1865, in Middletown and fathered Harris or Horace W. (b. 04/02/68) and Norman J. (b. 09/14/70). In 1870, he was living in Middletown but died in Harrisburg from a "cerebral hemorrhage."

He may have had a second middle name because his middle initial is frequently given as "M" even though his tombstone says "L," which he used In a pension deposition for a former comrade.
