Found in the Elkton Community History book (written by William and Bertha's grandson, Jack): Finally, my father, Roy. My father was one of the two children to spell the family name without the 'e' in Hays. After a bit of research I found the two names to be interchangeable among other Hats families owing to the lack of ability to rea and write in the early history of the families. My grandmother, Bertha, always thought it was Hayes.
