Article from the Chaska Weekly Valley Herald newspaper dated Thursday, July 17, 1975: Emma Heitkamp Celebrates 100 Years

Emma Heitkamp, who reached her 100th birthday July 12, was not only known as grandma to her family but to many others.

To her family and children visiting, she was famous for her chicken soup and sugar cookies.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran church of Carver, which she helped organize the Ladies Aid and still remains a Honorary Member.

Emma's parents were Fredrick and Wilamma Blume formally from Shakopee area, and later moved to a farm near Jordan. She was one of ten children.

On February 12, 1901, Emma married Henry Heitkamp and inherited a family of five children, which Heitkamp had by a previous marriage to Emma's sister, Louise, who passed away. These children were Hattie Galles nee Heitkamp, Edward (deceased), Harry, Otto, and Walter (deceased).

Emma was blessed with three children, Henry and Rueben of Carver, and Lillian Guettler nee Heitkamp, Fort Pierce, Florida. Mr. Heitkamp ran a blacksmith shop in Jordan until he move to a farm in Carver. After four years he left the farm to blacksmith in Belle Plaine as they were in need of one. After six years he moved back to the farm and there he remained till his death in 1935. Emma remained on the farm with her son Henry till she was 93, doing much of her own work. Then they sold the farm and built a home on a corner of the farm. Here she enjoyed one year in her new home. And then went to make her home at Friendship Manor.

Emma has 30 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

A family picnic was held in Shakopee Memorial Park to which 120 attended, coming from Florida; South Dakota; Kasson, Minnesota; Waseca, Minnesota; St. Paul; Minneapolis; Dalbo, Minnesota; and local family, after which some gathered at Friendship Manor to bring well wishes to Mrs. Heitkamp.

Emma received floral arrangements and gifts and many cards, among them a letter from the Governor of Minnesota and the President and Mrs. Ford of the United States.

"The staff of Friendship Manor surely helped to make her day a success," a family spokesman said.

Emma Heitkamp, daughter of Friederich Blume and Wilhelmina Podsmidt Blume was born July 12, 1875, in Jordan, Minnesota.

She was baptized August 8, 1875 and confirmed April 14, 1889 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Jordan, Minnesota.

On February 12, 1901 she married Henry F. Heitkamp. Their children are Henry W. Heitkamp of Carver, Rueben F. Heitkamp of Carver, Lillian Guettler of Florida, Harry Heitkamp of Carver, Hattie Galles of Chaska and Otto Heitkamp of Belle Plaine, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by children, Edward and Walter Heitkamp.

Survivors besides her children are 30 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ida DeGraff of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Following her marriage to Henry, Emma lived most of her life on a farm near Carver. At the death of Henry in 1935, she remained on the farm with her son until she was 93 years old. She was a resident of Friendship Manor in Shakopee since that time.

She is remembered by her family and friends as a tireless worker, a devoted mother and a committed Christian woman. She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran's first Ladies Aid.
