Younger son of Richard de Lovetot and his wife, Christine. Husband of Margaret, the daughter of Robert d'Eyville and his wife, Denise. They were married by 1268, and she died by 1290.

Secondly, he married Joan, the daughter of William Standon, the widow of Batholomew de Briaunon.

Sir John had at least four sons and three daughters, most likely with his first wife.

John was a Justice of the Common Please from 1275 and 1289. He fell from grace and was dismissed when he failed to prevent a Thomas Weyland from altering court documents. He paid the fine of £1000 between 1290 and 1293, securing his release from prison in the Tower. He was imprisoned again in 1293 and released for only 1000 marks.

He died shortly before 05 Nov 1294. In 1301, his son and heir, John, alleged his father had been murdered at the orders of Walter Langton, the bishop of Coventry, who had been carrying on with John's wife, Joan, who died August of 1302.
