He was born in Denmark, SC on October 1, 1927 to the late Aiken A. Gunnells and Essie Still Gunnells.
Aiken was a kind and caring man to all he met. He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He loved fishing and "lived on the water" whenever possible. Aiken also loved his vegetable garden which he planted and nurtured every year.
Mr. Gunnells served his country in the National Guard for 28 years and retired with the rank of Captain. He was employed at Wholesale Radio Supply in Charleston for 36 years.
He was a member of Doorway Baptist Church, North Charleston.
Mr. Gunnells is survived by his wife: Helen Brantley Gunnells of Charleston; daughters: Belinda Davis of Charleston, and Cathy Harkness of Charleston; son: Glenn Arden Gunnells of Charleston; 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; sisters: Mildred DeHay of North Charleston, SC, and Esther Sanderfer of Charleston.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Erwin and Etheridge Gunnells.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, June 11, 2013, at Carolina Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, North Charleston, SC. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, June 10, 2013 at the funeral home.
