U.S. Army World War II Veteran Elbert Black, Jr., 58, longtime resident of Indianola and retired county agent, died at the South Sunflower County Hospital, following a sudden illness. Elbert attended Mississippi State University where he was a brother of the Mississippi Beta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity & graduated with the Class of 1939.

He served in the Army during WWII from JAN 1942 until his honorable discharge in AUG 1946.

A native of Marks, Elbert had been a resident of Indianola for the past 36 years.

He was a past president of the Indianola Rotary Club and a past president of the Mississippi County Agents Association. Prior to his death, he had been serving as chairman of the administrative board and Chairman of the Building Committee of Christ United Methodist Church. Retired recently as Sunflower County Agricultural Extension Agent, he was employed as an agricultural consultant for N.B. Hunt Ranches.

Services for Elbert were held on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Indianola First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Goodpaster officiating. Interment followed at City Cemetery with Coleman-Card Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Elbert leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Alice Oakes Black of 310 Westside Ave., Indianola; one daughter - Alice Black of Indianola; two sons - Major Cecil Black III of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and James William Black of Tupelo; three sisters - Mrs. Taylor H. Maddux of Batesville, Mrs. Crossett Hopper of Vernon, Texas, and Mrs. Fred Gordy of Hazelhurst; three brothers - George Black of Hernando, Clarence Black of Seattle, Washington, and John Black of Marks, and three grandchildren. - - A ,i .- .. . Active pallbearers at the funeral included Pete Jemberg, David Phillips, David Elliott, Gene Sykes, Leon Barnett, and John McCaskill.
