Lorraine Schmidt was born to George P. and Angeline (Hecker) Schmidt on December 8, 1924, in Mandan, at her grandparent's, Frank & Veronica Brucker Hecker's home. She was raised on a farm 11 miles east of Flasher, ND. She attended Oak Coulee Elementary School and also parochial school in Fallon, ND. She married Joseph Leingang, Jr. on November 16, 1943. They raised four sons, Gerald J., Vern J., Robert R. and Melvin on a farm 11 miles northwest of St. Anthony. Joseph died on February 2, 1968. Lorraine stayed on the farm with her sons until moving to Mandan. She worked at the ND State Capitol until her retirement.
On December 27, 1985, Lorraine married Lester W. Carman and they lived in Bismarck. Family was central to Lorraine's life. She was outgoing and involved in all types of family activities; reunions, birthdays, baptisms, etc. in which her close attention to detail was appreciated. Lorraine enjoyed letter writing, gardening, canning, baking and dancing. Her German potato salad, cinnamon rolls and rhubarb pie were famous. Going on bus tours with Lester were also highlights in Lorraine's life. Her strong, traditional Catholic faith was evident to everyone who knew and regularly attended mass with her.
