John Maurer was born in Germany in about 1846, and came to America around 1850. The names of his parents are believed to be John Maurer and Laura Real. John married Lena VanDeWerken, and together they had the following (known form census forms) children: Elisabeth 1872-?; Margaret 1873-?; Jay 1883-1896 (drowned in Detroit's Rouge River); and Maria Edna 1886-1939.
