My ancestor Aaron Cain was the first son (but second child) of William Cain Sr. and Mary Mason. He was born in 1825 in the Pickens District of South Carolina. He married Mariam Cole on February 17, 1850 in Pickens District. The young couple lived on Aaron's father's land in what is now Oconee County, SC. Mariam recorded their marriage date and the births of their four children in her family Bible, which is in the possession of descendants of one of her daughters. The children of Aaron and Mariam are: Mary Jane b.Dec. 28, 1850; William H.P. b.Oct. 15, 1852; Laura Charlotte b.Mar. 10, 1854; and Martha Anna b.Oct. 14, 1860.

On April 20, 1862, Aaron enlisted in Co. K of the 22 Regiment of the South Carolina Confederate Volunteers. His brothers Joel, Lewis and Richard all enlisted in the same regiment. On Feb. 20, 1864 Aaron was on special duty at Fort Sumter. On Apr. 28, he was home long enough to make out a will. On July 30, he and his brother Joel were killed at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia. Their names appear on the South Carolina memorial plaque at Blandford Church.

There is also a Veterans Administration marker for Aaron Cain at the Center Methodist Church Cemetery in Oconee County, South Carolina.
