On 23 April 1870, at Osby, Haderslev, Denmark, Peder married Kjestine "Christine" Marie Moller. Christine was the daughter of Rasmus Moller and Lise Hermansen, born as Skodborg, Haderslev, Denmark on 29 January 1844.
Peter, Christine, and infant son Falle Nielson immigrated to New York City in the USA on 16 March 1871. They settled in Blooming Prairie Township, Steele County, Minnesota. Their family grew to include seven children: 1. Falle; 2. Mette Kjerstine Nielson; 3. Lise Maria (Marie/"Mary" Eliza Nielson who married Peter Christian "Chris" Hanson and moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa; 4. Falle Nielson (named after his older brother who died prior to this son's birth); 5. Emma Bothilde Nielson who married Henry Emil Hansen; 6. Bartoline Nielson (Bertha Lena) who married Jens Knudsen Jensen (J.K. Jensen) and moved to Audubon, Iowa; and 7. Rasmus P. Nielsen.
In addition to his eldest son Falle, Christine preceded Peter in death on February 27, 1899 of heart failure complicated by tuberculosis.
