Ida Clementine Wilson McCabe was born on March 25, 1875, in Llano County, Texas. Her parents were James Washington Wilson and Quinna May Wimberley Wilson. She came to New Mexico in 1898, settling in Hidalgo County by 1900. She completed her education at New Mexico Normal School in Silver City. She taught school for several years until her marriage in 1902 to John Thomas McCabe, who was one of southwestern New Mexico's most successful ranchers until his death in April 1941. The couple owned the XT Ranch near Middle Animas, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, where they reared their two children Johnnie J. McCabe (Mrs. John S. Clark) and Thomas "Tom" Wilson McCabe. A third child, a daughter, died as an infant and was buried in Shakespeare Cemetery in Hidalgo County. Ida died on January 27, 1961, in Long Beach, California, where she had resided after the death of her husband.
