Dott was born 2 months premature, kept alive in a shoebox lined with cotton batting in the warming oven of the wood stove and fed with an eyedropper until she was old enough and strong enough to nurse. Her father was a veterinarian, and her grandfather was a licensed medical doctor who specialized in what we now call pediatrics as well as serving as the Methodist minister at Burrton between 1880 and 1883. She died after a long decline from pancratic cancer.
