The nickname "Sam" originated after the death of her 1st husband, Warren V.Mathiot, from a ruptured appendix. She worked for the Gage Hall Clinic in Hutchinson KS as a bookkeeper and receptionist, where she was required to use her initials to identify her work. There was another employee with the S.M. initials, so she used S.A.M. People who knew her from the early 30's knew her as Sam and continued to refer to her in that way for the rest of her life.
