My maternal grandfather and his family were Quaker. Granddad was taught the milling trade by an uncle in Benton county Arkansas, and became a mill superintendent, supervising grist mill and flour mill operations at various locations around central Kansas, including Stafford, Pratt, Hutchinson, Argonia, Arkansas City, McPherson, and Canton. He lost his sight to glaucoma in 1962, two weeks before his wife died.
