Parts from Obit: Judge James M. Baley Jr., 91, of Asheville, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 23, 1912, in Greensboro to James M. Baley Sr. and Mary Katherine Redmond.
He and his family moved soon thereafter to Marshall. In his teen years, his family moved to Asheville and he graduated from Hall Fletcher High School in 1927. He then attended Mars Hill College, attaining an associate degree in 1929 and continued at the University of N. C. earning an AB degree in 1923 and his LLB in 1933. As a new lawyer at the age of 21, he returned to Marshall in 1933. He was active as an attorney and a community servant in many capacities and in many organizations. He was named Alumnus of the Year for Mars Hill College in 1959. He was awarded the Silver Beaver for his work with the Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was past president of the Asheville Civitan Club.
He was Past Master of French Broad No. 292, where he was a member for more than 60 years. Judge Baley was a member of the North Carolina Constitution Study Committee in 1968 and was appointed a Commissioner for the National Conference on Uniform State Laws form 1985 through 1989. He was honored with a joint designation by the U.S. Congress naming the federal court and office complex in Asheville the Veach-Baley Complex.
Judge Baley was a dedicated Christian lay leader who taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and served as a deacon in his local Baptist congregations in Marshall and Asheville. A memorial service was held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 14 at Frist Baptist Church of Asheville. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Morris Funeral Home.
He was married to Diana Chandley for more than 50 years until her death in 1992. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William J. Baley, and a sister, Evelyn B. Starnes, both of Asheville. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Baley Atkinson and her husband, Tyrus R. Atkinson Jr. of Atlanta; son, James M. Baley III and his wife, Marilyn K. Bollinger of Asheville; and a sister-in-law, Annie R. Baley of Asheville.
