He was born Klemensas Paznokaitis in a farm village Rezgalai, near the small town of Sudargas. His father died when he was very young, and he was put out on a farm to work. Later he apprenticed to be a jeweler and watch repairman. He snuck out of Lithuania, and made his way to Scotland to work in the coal mines. He met Ona Truskeviciute, and they were married in Feb 1903. They sailed for America, landing in Dec 1903. He worked in the coal mines, and at various jobs until about 1921, when they settled in Lafayette. He opened a garage, gas station, watch and jewelery repair and grocery store over the years. He changed his name to Karl Clemens when he became a citizen in 1918. He raised 11 children, and was very active in helping the coal miners organize for better wages and work conditions. He lived in Lafayette at 104 E. Cleveland St, and his business was on S. Public Rd.
