James was the son of John and Sarah Hewitt. He married Kate Davis.


OBITUARY - James E. Hewitt died at the home of his mother in Livermore on Tuesday, Nov. 17 1903, aged 46 years. The cause of death was pronounced by his physician as yellow jaundice.

Deceased was born in Humboldt county on July 20, 1857. The home of his parents was at that time just south of St Joseph, on a farm now owned by Peter Erpelding. His younger days were mostly spent in this vicinity, and he was married on Nov. 1, 1885 to Kate Davis, the ceremony taking place at her home near Chicago. Miss Davis was a former school teacher at this place. Her death occured some six years later, after which Mr. Hewitt removed to Colorado, remaining there about seven years, returning to Livermore about two years ago.

Since that time he has worked at the carpenter trade and other various other business in or near Livermore. About a month ago his health failed and medical skill failed to assist him.

He leaves two children: Edward, 16 years of age, who is living here, and Phebe, 14 years, who makes her home with her mothers relatives in Hinsdale, Illinois, and who was here in time to see her father before his death. He also leaves an aged mother, six brothers, and two sisters, all whom were present at the funeral with the exception of Richard, in Washington.

Deceased was a man of temperate, good habits, strictly honest, and respected by all with whom he associated or had dealings. His religious views inclined toword that of the spiritualist. The funeral occured at the Baptist church in Livermore this week Thursday, being conducted by Rev. Farr of the Methodist church and he was buried in the Union cemetery north of town.
