Amos was the son of John and Mary Hewitt. He married Eliza LeCompte on 24 September 1873 at Lotts Creek, Humboldt, Iowa. They were the parents of Chauncey, Eleanor, Mary, Weaver, Faith, Georgia, and Janet.

Feb 28, 1829 - Humboldt Independent - Amos Hewitt of Livermore, eighty years of age and who has been ill for some time, passed away a his Livermore home Monday evening of this week. He was an old settler and a resident of the community for more than forty years. The funeral was held Thursday at the home and the services were in charge of the Masonic Lodge of Livermore. The remains were laid to rest in the Livermore cemetery.


Amos Hewitt, one of the old pioneers, died at his home in Livermore last week Monday evening, February 18. The 22nd of March be would have been eighty-two years old. His death was not unexpected as he had been in failing health for years. The cause of his death as old age.

The deceased was born March 22, 1847 in Oswego county, NY. He was the son of John & Mary Hewitt and came with them to Iowa at the age of 8. He married Eliza LeCompte in 1873 on the old LeCompte place now owned by John Murphy. There were born to them seven children: Chauncey with died in infancy; Eleanor deceased; Mrs Mary Robinson of Ignacio, Colorado; Weaver, Mrs Faith Gates, Mrs Gerogia Jones, deceased; Mrs Janet French Livermore.

He is survived by his wife, 4 children, 4 brothers, Richard & Loren, Oregon; Elmer & Hiram of Livermore; & 2 sisters Mrs Eugenia Clark of Oregon, Mrs Selmor Holmes, Livermore.

He was an old soldier serving in the Civil War enlisting with Co B 88th Iowa Volunteers. He was a charter member of the GAR post & was the last surviving member.

Mr & Mrs Hewitt purchased the old home farm north of town and always farming his business until they moved to town several years ago, building the beautiful residence in which they lived at the time of his death.
