Douglas Ralph Giffin was born on April 21, 1927, in Santa Barbara, California, the last son born to Elroy Purl Giffin of Nebraska, and Rosamond Margaret Breck, of Santa Barbara, California.

Douglas Giffin was a 7th generation California, a 11th generation Bostonian and a direct descendant of several early Spanish California families dating back to 1769. Both his ancestry includes being a descendant of the House of Stewart, the House of Tudor, the House of Lancaster of England and Scotland dating back to about 286 ad.

His ancestry includes: Robert de Bruce, King of Scotland; James Stewart V, King of Scotland; Princess Margaret Tudor, the sister to Henry VIII; Midshipman, George Stewart of the HMS Bounty and his daughter, Princess Margaret (Peggy), (A.K.A.: Maria Antonia de la Asencion Stewart of Tahiti) who married Jose Antonio Secundino de Olivera of Santa Barbara in 1817; Edward Breck of Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1635; Captain Jose Francisco de Ortega, the first commander of the Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara in 1782 and his wife, Maria Antonia Victoria Carrillo of Loreto, Baja California; Luis Manuel Quintero and Maria Petra Rubio, who were one of the founder families of El Pueblo de Los Angeles in 1781;

Douglas Ralph Giffin served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, as an aircraft mechanic at the end of World War II, but he never got the chance to serve in combat. Douglas entered the Army at Camp Beale, California, took his basic training at Biloxi, Mississippi. He was processed for overseas service at Greensfield, Georgia, and was reassigned to Maxwell Air Force Base (Army Air Corps), and was discharged from Squadron A, 308th AAF Base, Tyndall (Pendel) Army Air Field, Florida on 7 November 1946..

Douglas Giffin graduated from Fresno Technical High School in 1945 in Fresno, California, and after the military, he worked with the Carpenters Union of Southern California, was a member of the Elks Lodge of Torrance, since about 1979.
