In the US Civil War, James and 5 of his sons enlisted in the Confederate Army. (Sons born of his first wife, Elizabeth Collins.) Son Ivan was killed at Sharpsburg at age 13, with brother James (16) at his side. Son Newton (15) died of fever in VA. Son James was wounded and captured at Chancellorsville while helping defend Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's left flank. His regiment, the 23rd Georgia Volunteer Infantry, took a fight-to-the-death stand when surrounded by Union forces. His being wounded led to his capture. He was later released in a prisoner exchange, and went on to fight again.
