Bill was born September 23, 1923 in Akron, OH to William & Minnie Schmutzler Clayton. He grew up in west Akron and graduated from Buchtel High School. He worked as a sales clerk while attending the University of Akron until he enlisted in the US Army in 1943.

Bill was a good soldier, quickly moving through the ranks. He was a Staff Sargeant and platoon leader in France and Belgium following the D-Day invasion. He was badly wounded in Belgium and received a Purple Heart and Three Bronze Stars for his bravery. He was transported to England to recover.

Returning home to Akron, OH Bill worked as a Supervisor for Olsen Electronics. He never married and remained in the Akron area the rest of his life.
