Wilhelmina Elizabeth "Minnie" Schmutzler was born in Syracuse, NY in September 1893 to Charles & Louise Brockmann Schmutzler. The family moved to Detroit by 1900 and in 1909 relocated to Barberton, OH where her father worked for the Columbia Chemical Co.

Minnie worked for the Pittsburgh Valve & Fitting Co. in the early 1920s when she met Bill Clayton. They married in February 1923. Bill & Minnie had three children: Bill Jr., Joyce and Marilyn. During WWII Minnie became a Silver Star mother when Bill Jr. was wounded in Belgium. She was active for many years in the War Mothers association.

Bill and Minnie remained in the Akron, OH area the rest of their lives. She passed away July 20, 1977.
