On May 18, 1871, an act to establish a bridge across the San Gabriel River, at or near the Compton Crossing, below the mouth of Brush Creek, became law, authorizing James H. Holtzclaw to build and establish a toll bridge.

Word was received here yesterday of the death of Mr. J. H. (Uncle Jim) Holtzclaw, at his home on the San Gabriel river, seven miles west of Rockdale. Deceased was one of the early settlers of Milam county. He has been in ill health for several months. The Cameron Herald, December 10, 1903

. . . Mr. Holtzclaw . . . died at his home in this county Dec. 3, 1903. The wife of his first marriage departed this life March 1, 1901, respected and beloved by all who knew her. On Sept. 10, 1902, Mr. Holtzclaw was united in marriage to Miss Ida Eads of San Antonio, who survives him. He was a good man, a good husband and a kind neighbor. Peace to his ashes. Probate - Cameron, Nov. 18th - The will of J.H. Holtzclaw has been filed for probate in County Court. Mrs. J.H. Holtzclaw is named as executrix. The estate is of the value of $10,000. The deceased was the father of Ed Holtzclaw, the present sheriff of Milam Co. The Thorndale Thorn, November 23, 1906
