MONTICELLO — Atty. William A. Loveland, 76, president of the Bank of Monticello since 1940, died at a Hazel Green hospital Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness.

He was a Green County judge from 1923 to 1934.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Charles Lee, Shullsburg, and several nieces and nephews.

The body was taken to the Voegeli funeral home.

Atty. W. A. Loveland, 76 years of age, passed away at 11:40 Tuesday morning, June 23, 1953, in the Hazel Green hospital. A heart attack proved fatal to the noted Monticello attorney and former Green county judge. Mr. Loveland had been in failing health for the past year or more and had been hospitalized for the past two weeks, suffering from a heart condition.

Mr. Loveland was a credit to his profession and his able counsel and words of advice were
sought out by hundreds of citizens of the community. He was extremely well versed in matters concerning his profession as well as current events. A fluent and forceful speaker, Mr. Loveland was principal speaker at scores of patriotic gatherings in this section of the state in years past.

Mr. Loveland was born in Washington township Oct. 8, 1876, the son of Franklin and Maria
Lemon Loveland. He attended schools in Monticello and was a graduate of the Naperville
college and of the University of Wisconsin law school. He taught rural school for several years and also farmed in Minnesota for a short time before opening an office for the practice of law in Monticello. Mr. Loveland became county judge in June, 1923, defeating the late Judge John M. Becker, for the unexpired term of Judge John L. Sharon. Two years 1ater he was elected for a full six-year term, defeating J. D. Dunwiddie and then was re-elected for another six-year term, defeating Oliver A. Leverson, of Monroe. On Dec. 31, 1933, Judge Loveland resigned his post and devoted his full time to his law practice in Monticello. In August, 1936, Mr. Loveland joined Arthur C. Benkert, Monroe in the practice of law at the county seat, and the firm has continued since that time.

Mr. Loveland was a director of the Bank of Monticello since 1916 and had served the
institution as president since 1940. He had been vice-president for several years before being made bank president. Mr. Loveland served as village treasurer at one time and held other offices of public trust. Mr. Loveland was a. charter member of the Madison Elks lodge. He was a member and past master of Monticello Union lodge No. 155, a member of the Royal Arch Masons, Madison Consistory, and Zor Shrine, and was a member of the Green county Shrine club. He was a member and first patron of the Monticello Order of Eastern Star.

Mr. Loveland was a member of the Zwingli Evangelical and Reformed church.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Charles Lee, Shullsburg, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, in 1907, his mother, in 1942, three brothers, Otto,
1930, Frank, 1940, and Henry, 1945, and by one sister, Mrs. Matt Klassy.

Funeral services will be held at 2 Friday afternoon in the Zwingli Evangelical and Reformed
church. The Rev. A. R. Achtemeier, church pastor, will officiate.
Masonic services will be held at the grave in Highland cemetery.
