FLORENCE: Mrs. Lydia Matthews "Granny", 92, died Monday, January 27, 2014 at Carolina Hospital System after an illness.
Ms. Lydia was born June 15, 1921, in Florence County, a daughter of the late Garland Leroy Carmon and Eleanor "Ellen" Lee Carmon. She had a strong love for the Lord, her family and friends. She loved to bless them with her delicious meals and desserts. Ms. Lydia celebrated her 92 amazing years despite health issues. She was a life member of Lee's Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a retired seamstress, and devoted her life to making a warm and inviting home.
Ms. Lydia is survived by her daughter, Betty M. Wilkes of Scranton and son, Garland Leroy Matthews of Hanna. Three grandchildren, Kathy Flowers of Scranton, Don Matthews (Pam) of Scranton and Amy Lee (Ronnie) of Lake City; great grandchildren, Taylor Leigh Flowers of Rock Hill, Jeffery Matthews, Nicole Parker (David), and Haley Matthews all of Scranton, and Jody Lee and Hunter Lee, both of Lake City; and sister, Bessie Wilkes of Scranton.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elijah Matthews and Dan Matthews; two brothers, Hoyt Carmon and L. G. Carmon; two sisters, Roy Lee Poston and Dorothy Lee. Mrs. Lydia's daughter, Betty M. Wilkes, also died January 27, 2014, a few hours after her death—their home-going was just as close as their lives had been.
Mrs. Lydia's family and Betty's family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton.
Her home-going service will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 31, 2014, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Matthews Cemetery, Lake City.
