He grew up in California's San Fernando Valley in a movie industry family. His mother was an assistant movie producer, as well as a script supervisor and got him involved in the business at an early age. In 1975 he was basketball player #55 on UCLA's National Championship team under Coach John Wooden. He graduated from the University of California in Los Angeles, CA. He did some work as a stuntman for tv episodes and also had a role as a bartender in the film "The Ty Cobb Story". He then moved behind the scenes and for nearly 2 decades was a top level executive with 20th Century Fox in Los Angeles, CA distributing movies like Avatar and Titanic. He was married for over 20 years and had 3 sons.

On May 1, 2012 about 10pm he left his temporary residence, behind the wheel of his black Mercedes-Benz to meet a girlfriend ... and then he went missing. In February 2013 his car was finally found in a storage unit in Porter Ranch, Simi Valley, CA. Authorities stated the condition of the car indicated he had been the victim of a homicide. In March 2013 his missing case was reclassified as a homicide case.

On Sunday 26 October 2014 his remains were found by hikers in a remote part of the Angeles-National-Forest in the high desert north of Los Angeles, CA. His shallow grave was found about 3/4 of a mile south of Mt.Emma Road and 47th Street East in rural Palmdale. Cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and The Los Angeles County coroner’s office formally pronounced Smith dead on that date. In April 2015 grand jurors indicted his girlfriend's estranged husband (a known criminal) on capital murder charges with the special circumstance of lying in wait.
