The son of Henry Harmon & Elizabeth A. (Reddy) Smith, in 1860 he was a moulder presumably living in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he was known to have lived in New Bloomfield, Perry County, and one year later would enlist in Adams County. He is not found in the 1860 census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one [sic] in Harrisburg April 20, 1861, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. C, 16th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Gettysburg September 9, 1861, and mustered into federal service at York September 25 as a private with Co. F, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Captured at the battle of Carter's Woods (Stephenson's Depot) on June 15, 1863, he was incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia. Following parole, he was forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, where he and few hundred of his comrades deserted, although most returned on their own, Henry included. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 3, 1864, at Brandy Station, Virginia, and transferred to Co. E when the regiment consolidated into a battalion in October 1864. Promoted to corporal March 1, 1865, he honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He married widow Anna M. Shroy March 15, 1865, in Mechanicsburg and fathered Hettie A. (b. @1867), Charles A. (b. @1868), Mary Elizabeth (b. 01/09/71 - married George W. Condran), Rebecca Jane (b. 06/22/73 - married David A. Demmy), and Bertha E. (b. 08/30/79 - married a Yeagley). After the war, he lived in various locations in Cumberland County and later in Dauphin County at Harrisburg, Highspire, Royalton, and Middletown. On August 3, 1895, he entered the soldiers' home at Hampton, Virginia, but discharged March 7, 1896. The latter part of his life he passed in the soldiers' home in Erie, Pennsylvania. He went blind in one eye from an infection he claimed he had contracted while confined at Belle Isle Prison.
