Charlesworth is first listed in the 1850 Census of Wetzel County, (W)Virginia living with his parents, aged 12 years. In the 1860 Census of Wetzel County, he (Charles) was listed as age 23 years and still living with Benjamin and Thankful and family – no Occupation listed. In the 1880 Census of Washington County, Lawrence Township, Ohio (Charles) is listed as 42, a blacksmith, and married to Arabella Theresa (Hoff) Johnston and having 8 children; all of which were born in Ohio. By 1900 Charlesworth and Thankful had moved to Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Ohio with two children; Charles was still listed as a Blacksmith. Charles had owned Blacksmith shops in Marietta as well as one on West Lane Avenue near North High Street in Columbus and a few of his sons also worked for him as time permitted.
Charlesworth and Arabella had 12 children and all but 3 lived to adulthood.

Charles W. Johnson, aged 72, a resident of Columbus for 25 years, died Wednesday at his home 70 1/2 East Third Avenue, from uremic poisoning. He had been ill for the past 10 years. He was a Blacksmith by occupation and is survived by nine children. these are: Charles E. of Dallas, Tex: Franklin, Thomas, Joseph, Walter, Hiram, Virginia Howe and Irene Evans of Columbus and Della Brown of Newark. Pletcher-Brown Company will have charge of the funeral arrangements for which have not been completed.
