A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-six and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 18, 1863, as a private with Co. H, 3rd U.S. Colored Troops, promoted to corporal either April or August 25, 1864 (both are reported), and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865, at Jacksonville, Florida.
He married Ellen B. lnu, twenty-two years his junior (although he is living with Charlotte, five years his senior, in the 1860 census), and fathered George W., Charles, and Ellen A. (b. 11/??/91). In 1890, he was living in Middletown, Dauphin County, where he died at his home on Market Street from "uremia," a symptom of "interstitial nephritis." His tombstone says he died at age 74-10-0, but his death certificate says 75-10-0, which calculates to the birth date shown here and on the tombstone. His obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent claims he died at the age of seventy-two.
