Antiquarian bookseller. Born in Wallasey, Cheshire, he moved to North London with his family at the age of eight, and was educated at Hornsey County Grammar School. In 1924, he began work at Marks & Co., booksellers, at 106-108 Charing Cross Road, although they later moved to No. 84 in the same street. During the Second World War, he served in the Middle East as a Private in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He died of peritonitis, and was cremated on the 1st. January 1969; it is said that his funeral was attended by almost all of the London booksellers. He is best remembered for the letters exchanged with Helene Hanff, which were collected in her book, "84 Charing Cross Road." This was dramatised by Hugh Whitemore and, in 1975, was televised on the B.B.C., with Frank Finlay as Mr. Doel, and filmed in 1987, in which the part was played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.
