Originally named St. Marylebone Cemetery, the cemetery was formerly managed by the St. Marylebone City Council, but in 1965 became the responsibility of the City of Westminster. The name officially changed to East Finchley Cemetery in the early 1990s. The cemetery's history shows it went through several owners, and at one time, the cemetery was sold for a mere three pence. Today, it is recognized for its historical importance. The St. Marylebone Burial Board purchased 47 acres for the cemetery in 1854. As part of this 19th century cemetery, the St. Marylebone Anglican Chapel, East was built in 1855, which is a grade II National Historical site. In the northwest corner of the cemetery are the military graves from World War I and World War II, which are maintained by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Today, over 22,000 grave sites are in this active cemetery and the final resting place for a host of well-known people. The grounds are graced with crosses and old upright markers along with many award-winning metal statues green in color from a natural patina. The 1899 Glenesk Family Mausoleum is a Grade II a on the National Heritage List for England. With a blend of the old with the modern, adjacent to the old cemetery is St Marylebone Crematorium, which first opened in 1937. Today, a very modern crematorium building stands on architectural-designed grounds of walking paths, fountains, and manicured rose, azalea, and rhododendron gardens. There are plots for a boulder tablet bearing names in a garden and memorial plaques with names on a wall. No dogs are allowed in the gardens. There is an internal columbarium or "House of Peace" with niches for cremation ashes. With sitting for 150, a modern chapel is on the crematorium grounds.
