Martin was one of the early settlers of Burbank, California. He moved there in 1893 and planted an apple and peach orchard and a watermelon field. He sold the fruit in local markets and prospered as a farmer. He sold his ranch in 1906 and in 1911 became one of Burbank's first board of trustees. Pupka grew up in Iowa and in 1869 made his way to Nevada, returning to Nebraska and Kansas where he resided for a number of years. In 1881 he returned to California and took up farming grain fields in what is now Santa Monica. He married Maria Arneson in 1874 and they had three children and she died in 1888. In 1904, Pupka married Kate Ewing and they remained in Burbank up to his death. He is credited with helping get the Pacific Electric Railway into Burbank. As one of the founders of the First National Bank of Burbank, he also served as the first vice president of the Burbank Savings Bank.
