The son of Jesse B. & Nancy Martin, née Burkholder Harting, In 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Jacob Zimmerman in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. H, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866. The regiment was assigned only guard duty and thus discharged with no battle casualties.
He married Julia R. Buck and fathered Cora May (b. ? - married Henry B. Jones). Julia died in 1906, and he married Laura Isabel Littrell.
