Mrs. Nancy Harting, Earl Township's Oldest Resident
Mrs. Nancy Harting, for many years a resident of Hinkletown, in Earl township, departed this life, at her home in that place, on Tuesday morning at 6 o'clock. The infirmities of old age brought on a gradual weakening of the system which resulted in her death, at the age of 95 years. For nearly a year past she had been confined to her room, most of the time in bed. Until this last sickness she had enjoyed excellent health all her life; her eyesight was but slightly impared and it is only within the last few years that she had been compelled to wear spectacles. She was remarkably well preserved for one so aged, and until laid low by her last illness she used to take great pleasure in doing fancy and useful patchwork, thus employing her time.
The deceased was born on February 15th, 1801, and was therefore almost 96 years of age. Her maiden name was Burkholder, her ancestors having lived in the neighborhood of Bowmansville. She bore the distinction of having been one of the most aged residents of Earl township, if not the oldest.
The deceased was twice married and was the mother of fourteen children, of whom eight survive. Her first husband was Mr. William Martin, a native of England [Ireland]. Of the children to her first husband she leaves two, Isaac Martin, residing with his daughters, Miss Eda Martin and Mrs. Menno Nolt, on Church street, this borough, and Mrs. Richard N. Winters, of Hinkletown. The second husband of the deceased was Jesse Harting, who came from the vicinity of Adamstown. He has been deceased about thirty years. Of the children of this marriage, six survive as follows: Mrs. Louisa Selvert, of Hinkletown; Mrs. Phebe Kemper, residing on Chestnut street, this borough; Mrs. Julia Overholser, of Sioux City, Iowa; Wellington Harting, of Hinkletown; Jesse Harting, of Roanoke, Va.; and Davis Harting, of Canton, Ohio.
Mrs. Harting was widely known and highly esteemed. She was a member of the Evangelical church at Terre Hill for many years.
The funeral will take place on Saturday morning from her home in Hinkletown, at 9:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Terre Hill cemetery.
