Elizabeth Bellicent Murphree, 103, of Oklahoma City, OK passed away April 19, 2013. She was born June 5, 1909 to Jacob and Susanna Defehr in Corn, OK. Elizabeth's mother passed away when she was 10 years old. This necessitated Elizabeth going to work for Mrs. Galloway, the banker's wife. Elizabeth would go to their house before school and cook breakfast for the family; she then would run to school; at noon she would go back cook lunch, run back to school and after school she would go and cook dinner, do all the dishes, bathe the children, help them with homework, and she would go home to do her homework. She must have been an amazing person, because she graduated as Valedictorian of her class. Elizabeth had dreams of becoming a nurse, however, her dad, Jacob the German informed her that "Nice girls don't become nurses." She couldn't let go of her dream so one day she asked her Uncle CJ for an old coat, she cut it down to make a coat for herself, made underwear out of feed sack material, borrowed train fare, and went to Chicago to enroll in nursing school. It was ironic she graduated with honors soon after, but chose to give it up for her fiancée. He wanted her to quit 3 months before graduation, but she refused so married someone else. It was a lucky break for her, because she got Clarence McMurphree who was a wonderful, great sense of humor, and loving husband and father. Later, her dad became very ill. And guess who he moved in with to have her take care of him? That's right, the nurse Elizabeth, his daughter. So it was good she defied him and went to nursing school. She worked at TAFB, received lost recognition as an outstanding nurse in her first First Aid Station for 26 years. She is survived by 2 children, Karin and Kay; 2 grandchildren, Colby and Greg Williams. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Murphree; 2 grandchildren, Elizabeth and Brent Hopkins; 1 great-grandchild, Alex Williams. Services will be held 10:00 AM, Monday, April 22, 2013 at John M. Ireland Funeral Home Chapel, Moore, OK. Interment to follow at Sunny Lane Cemetery, Del City, OK.
