Funeral services for Cloyd Henry Read, 68, early Dallas lawyer and civic leader who died at his home, 4927 Junius, Thursday after an illness of several months, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the East Dallas Presbyterian Church, of which he was charter member, with the Rev. David F. Murphy, pastor, officiating. A native of Brownsville, Tenn., Mr. Read was the son of John Calvin Read and the grandson of E. J. Read, both noted jurists of West Tennessee. After being graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1895, he came to Texas and was graduated from the University of Texas law school and was admitted to the Texas bar in 1898. In 1899 Mr. Read helped found the law firm of Read & Lowrance here, and at the time of his death he was senior partner of the firm of Read, Lowrance & Bates. For the last forty-one years Mr. Read had been a director of the YMCA here. A charter member of the East Dallas Presbyterian Church, he was at the time of his death an elder and clerk of the church's session. He was a member of the Dallas, Texas and American Bar Association, a director of the Liberty State Bank and a member of the Dallas Country Club. Mr. Read served three years as an Alderman here in Dallas, and was an advocate of the adoption of the commission form of government. He is survived by his wife, mother, Mrs. Kate L. Read; two sisters, Mrs. J.D. Aldredge and Miss Daisy Read; a daughter, Mrs. Jay Touchstone, and two grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Rutherford Parks, Wilson Higginbotham, Michaux Nash, Lester Russell, E.C. Singleton and John H. Henry. Dallas Morning News, January 8, 1943
