FORMER NEWTONIAN EXPIRES SUDDENLY IN AUSTIN, TEX.

Funeral services were held at 4pm Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Weed-Corley Funeral Home in Austin, Tex., for James Wheaton Briggs, 64, resident of 1204 East 30th Street, Austin. Mr. Briggs died Sunday, Oct. 28, 1962, in Llano while attending a housewarming for Jim Stumfall, a member of the Ben Hur Shrine Troubadours organization, and Mrs. Stumfall.

Dr. Madison V. Scott, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the rights. Burial was in Capital Memorial Gardens, Austin, where graveside services were conducted by Austin Lodge No. 12, AF&FM.

Mr. Briggs was born in Hortonville, Wis., Nov. 25, 1897, and moved with his late parents, William Henry and Olive Denney Briggs, and other members of the family to Newton in 1905. He was a veteran of World War I, serving with the United States Army. He had been a resident of Austin 43 years, and was employed by Hammerman and Gainer, insurance adjusters.

He was a member of Austin Lodge No. 12, AF&AM, Ben Hur Shrine, the Ben Hur Shrine Troubadours, Scottish Rite Bodies and the American Legion. He particularly was active in Ben Hur Shrine work, principally in Shrine Circus advertising and ticket sales. He was a member of the Shrine Troubadours, a small musical group playing for charitable and lodge activities over Texas.

Mr. Briggs and the Troubadours were playing for the housewarming and he had been featured. As the group applauded, he smiled and fell forward, a victim of a heart attack. The minister remarked at the funeral that he died with a smile on his face doing what he loved - making others happy.

Mr. Briggs leaves his widow, Mrs. Harriet Briggs of the home address, Austin; a brother, Charles Briggs, Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas; a sister, Miss Olive Briggs, 200 Henderson Street, Greenwood; and a number of nieces and nephews. 2 brothers, W.H. (Will) Briggs Jr., and E.W. (Ed) Briggs, and a sister, Miss Jennie L. Briggs, predeceased him.
