༺⊰❁ John Derr (Johann George Derr) was born April 6, 1760 in Apr. 6, 1760 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was the son of Johann Georg Derr (Duerr) (1711-1770) and Anna (or Anna Maria) Barbara Knauss, who were married on 15 Feb 1735. As a descendant of Johann Georg Derr of 1711-1770, his line can be traced back to the Stuttgart area of Germany.
He moved to Baltimore, Maryland. John married a Elisabeth Barbara Wentz in about 1782.
John, B. 6 Apr 1760, was in the American Revolution, D. 15 Jul 1854, Uniontown, Carroll Co. MD.
Revolutionary War Pension Application: In 1843 at age 83, John Derr applied for a pension based on his service during the Revolution: Application # S 12762, stating that he was born in Northampton Co., PA on 6 Apr 1760, lived from 1781 to 1786 in (then) Philadelphia Co., PA; moved to York Co., PA in 1786; moved to Baltimore Co., MD in 1812; moved to Carroll (then Frederick) Co, MD in 1826. He had enlisted in Philadelphia in July 1776, and gave military service intermittently for brief periods between 1776 and 1782.

He married , about 1782, Elisabeth Barbara, dau. of Johan Frederick Wentz of Upper Salford Twp. and his wife, Margaretha, dau. of Andreas and Elisabeth Barbara Miller of Upper Salford, Philadelphia (later Montgomery) Co., PA. In his will, proved 2 Nov 1758, Andreas Miller had left his land to his son-in-law, Ulrich Stoller, who had married another of his Daughters, Elisabeth. Ulrich sold this land to Frederick Wentz on 7 Dec 1758, but after he died in 1768, his 3 sons who were of age sold it to John Derr on 2 May 1783.

The Derr family were contemporary pewterers, lamp makers, glass blowers and silversmiths, making things such as kitchen utensils, tools, coffee pots, lancet boxes, etc, as well as being well known as gunsmiths.
A John Derr used a customary Berks County style brass side plate. The Derr Family became famous in Oley Valley as blacksmiths and their history has been documented in a book entitled "The House of Derr". (Tho, it is said the book is mainly about a Peter Derr, it does cover three Derr brothers: Peter, John, and Joe.) The book includes pictures of Derr rifles. Derr is listed in American Gunsmiths by Sellers as having worked in Weisenberg, PA from 1800-1807 and in Oley Valley from 1818-1831. I have also read he worked as a gunsmith until 1850.

༺⊰❁ John Derr (Johann George Derr) was born April 6, 1760 in Apr. 6, 1760 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was the son of Johann Georg Derr (Duerr) (1711-1770) and Anna (or Anna Maria) Barbara Knauss, who were married on 15 Feb 1735. As a descendant of Johann Georg Derr of 1711-1770, his line can be traced back to the Stuttgart area of Germany.
He moved to Baltimore, Maryland. John married a Elisabeth Barbara Wentz in about 1782.
John, B. 6 Apr 1760, was in the American Revolution, D. 15 Jul 1854, Uniontown, Carroll Co. MD.
Revolutionary War Pension Application: In 1843 at age 83, John Derr applied for a pension based on his service during the Revolution: Application # S 12762, stating that he was born in Northampton Co., PA on 6 Apr 1760, lived from 1781 to 1786 in (then) Philadelphia Co., PA; moved to York Co., PA in 1786; moved to Baltimore Co., MD in 1812; moved to Carroll (then Frederick) Co, MD in 1826. He had enlisted in Philadelphia in July 1776, and gave military service intermittently for brief periods between 1776 and 1782.

He married , about 1782, Elisabeth Barbara, dau. of Johan Frederick Wentz of Upper Salford Twp. and his wife, Margaretha, dau. of Andreas and Elisabeth Barbara Miller of Upper Salford, Philadelphia (later Montgomery) Co., PA. In his will, proved 2 Nov 1758, Andreas Miller had left his land to his son-in-law, Ulrich Stoller, who had married another of his Daughters, Elisabeth. Ulrich sold this land to Frederick Wentz on 7 Dec 1758, but after he died in 1768, his 3 sons who were of age sold it to John Derr on 2 May 1783.

1830 census MD Carroll Co., Woodsboro Dist. Henry Derr: 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30 :
Children: 3 males and 1 female all under 5.
Known Child 1. John Thomas Derr, b. 4 Mar 1827, bapt. 25 Mar 1827, Creagerstown,son of Henry and Sarah. He married 1st, 25 Jan 1850, Carroll Co., Sarah White, b. 2 Jan 1828, d. 4 Mar 1853, Bur. Uniontown, Church of God Cem.
He married 2nd, 3 Feb 1855, Carroll Co., Ann Hyde, b. ca 1815.
In 1880 Census MD Carroll Co., Franklin Dist. John T. Derr, age 54, Shoemaker, Wife, Ann, age 65. No records for the others found.

The Derr family were contemporary pewterers, lamp makers, glass blowers and silversmiths, making things such as kitchen utensils, tools, coffee pots, lancet boxes, etc, as well as being well known as gunsmiths.
A John Derr used a customary Berks County style brass side plate. The Derr Family became famous in Oley Valley as blacksmiths and their history has been documented in a book entitled "The House of Derr". (Tho, it is said the book is mainly about a Peter Derr, it does cover three Derr brothers: Peter, John, and Joe.) The book includes pictures of Derr rifles. Derr is listed in American Gunsmiths by Sellers as having worked in Weisenberg, PA from 1800-1807 and in Oley Valley from 1818-1831. I have also read he worked as a gunsmith until 1850.
