William Phelps was born in 1657 in Bristol, Somerset, England. He was the son of Thomas Phelps (1624-1674) and unknown mother. William married Anne Rachel Gorsuch (1656-1711) in 1680. Anne was the daughter of Richard Gorsuch (1637-1694) and Elizabeth Roe (1639-1719).

William and Anne Rachel Gorsuch Phelps were the parents of John Phelps (1683-1746) and William Phelps. Don't know if they had any more children. This is an interesting family from reading this page in this book: "Pedigrees of Some of the Emperor Charlemagne's Descendants. Volume I" page 190 shows that Anne Barne married Sir William Lovelace who was a knight from Kent, England. Their daughter, Anne Lovelace born around 1611 married Reverend John Gorsuch. Their son, Richard Gorsuch was Anne Rachel's dad. This book tells us that Anne Gorsuch married William Phelps. Their son, John married Margaret. We have discovered on ancestry.com that this is Martha Margaret Talbot. John and Martha Margaret Phelps were the parents of Col. John Phelps.
