Born in ytre Øye, Kvinesdal, Norway, went to sea. His third voyage, 1884, was the ship "Noel" from Arendal to the German town Hamburg. With the ship, he continued to Sidney, Australia where Jens stayed. A coal miner, he married in 1891 to Matilda Linnertson. They had 6 children:
1.) Francis Martin Johnson, b. 1893, d. 23 July 1958, married Dorothy Mabel Cornwell, 3 sons: Kenneth, Neville & Trevor.
2.) Mary Elizabeth Johnson, b. 1896, d. 1948, called "May" or "Bessie", she married Albert Maurice Webb in 1918 (divorced, 1 daughter Enid)
3.) Jens Christian Johnson "Chris", b. 24 Jan. 1898, d. 1955. Suffered gas poisoning in WWI. Never married.
4.) Annie A. Johnson, b. & d. 1900 in Gosford, NSW.
5.) Lily Violet Johnson, b. 1902, d. 30 Jan 1961 in Sydney, married 1-Francis George Webb (divorced, no children). Married 2-Lennox Graeme Hunter, 1 adopted daughter: Dorothy. Married 3-Arthur H. Thomson, no children.
