Jo Ann Whatley's Obituary

Jo Ann graduated Summa Cum Laude from Spelman College in 1967. She spent her junior year abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. Rather than returning right away to Spelman, she spent the next 6 years working, studying and traveling in Europe. She earned a second degree in French Culture and Civilization from the University of Paris while there. She was fluent in both French and German and she also studied art in Vienna, Austria. After returning to the United States, she earned a teaching certificate from the University of New York and a Master's Degree in African-American Studies from Atlanta University. She later taught art at the Children's Art Carnival in Harlem, the Atlanta Public Schools' Downtown Learning Center, and at Spelman College.

Jo Ann was the author of "Banking and Finance Careers", published in 1978 and at the time of her death was employed with the IRS as a tax examiner for 17 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Camille and Beverly McDonald, brother Plemon El-Amin, nieces Fatimah El-Amin and Keisha McDonald; nephews Kevin McDonald and Fareed El-Amin and a grand-nephew, Khalil McDonald.

Jo Ann died about five weeks after her sister, Beverly Whatley McDonald. A memorial service had already been planned in Atlanta for Beverly and it became a joint memorial for both sisters. The service was held at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, July 31, 2010. Interment at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA.
