Mr. Charles D. Whitehead, age 82 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at St. Mary's Health Center.
Charles was born November 30, 1930, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., the son of William Carl, Sr. and Lucy Farmer Whitehead. He was married on November 5, 1954, at the Evangelical and Reform Church in Jefferson City, Mo., to Shirley M. Heberle.
He grew up in Charleston, Mo., where he was a 1948 graduate of Charleston High School, and later attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. While on the Missouri State Highway Patrol, he graduated in 1970 from the Northwestern University Traffic Institute, Chicago, Illinois.
Charles served in the United States Army Air Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Nagoya, Japan, as a military policeman. He received an Honorable Discharge in August 1952.
In 1953, he graduated from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Training Academy and was assigned to Rolla. In April 1954, he was transferred to Poplar Bluff, and in September 1954, he was assigned to Kennett. He was then transferred to Perryville in September 1958 and promoted to Corporal in 1967. He was transferred to Fredericktown in February 1968 and promoted to Sergeant. Following his education in 1970 at the Northwestern Traffic Institute, he reported to the General Headquarters in Jefferson City where he was assigned to the training academy. In 1973, he was promoted to Lieutenant assigned to Motor Vehicle Inspection. In 1976, he served in Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection. He was promoted to rank of Captain in 1980 and named the director of the Training Academy where he served until his retirement on September 1, 1986, concluding a 33-year career of service to the Patrol.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5; a 50-year member of the Jefferson Lodge, No 43, A.F. & A.M.; a past member and president of the Capital Shrine Club; a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693; and a member of The MASTERS.
He enjoyed the Lake of the Ozarks, playing cards and golf, traveling, Missouri Tiger football and basketball, and Cardinal baseball.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Shirley Whitehead; two children, Sue Whitehead Cox and her husband Steve of Jefferson City, Mo., and Paul Whitehead and his wife Jan Chaney Whitehead of Katy, Texas; four grandchildren, Lea Muck of Kansas City, Mo., Kayla Muck Wilbers of Jefferson City, Mo., Lindsay Whitehead of New York, New York, and Sara Whitehead of San Marcos, Texas; six brothers, William Carl Whitehead, Jr. of Emporia, Virginia; Arthur Whitehead and his wife Jan of Sikeston, Mo.; Irvin Whitehead and his wife Hazel of Olean, Mo.; Jim Whitehead of Wyatt, Mo.; Bob Whitehead and his wife Mary Jane of Charleston, Mo.; and Ben Whitehead and his wife Phyllis of Charleston, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Judy Whitehead of Charleston, Mo.; one brother-in-law Georgi Risko of North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Russell Whitehead, John Whitehead and Richard Whitehead; and three sisters, Carla Jo Knaup, Jennye Wedeking and Nancy Risko; three sisters-in-law Jo Whitehead, Lela Whitehead and Barbara Whitehead; two brothers-in-law Richard Knaup and Jim Wedeking.
Funeral services will be conducted at in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Daniel Hilty officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
