On 24th September, 1918, as World War I neared its climax, the Otranto, full with American troops, set sail as part of a convoy on her final voyage from New York bound for Glasgow and Liverpool. Off the coast of Islay, Scotland on October 6 the ships Otranto and Kashmir collided during a storm. The Kashmir survived, but the Otranto was doomed. Water poured through a huge hole in her side, and she drifted helplessly in the direction of the rocky Islay coast. HMS Mounsey was the first ship to come to the aid of the Otranto. The massive liner dwarfed the destroyer rearing and plunging in the enormous swell as the disciplined lines of US troops waited for their chance to jump onto the heaving deck of the Mounsey. The ships came together four times, the Mounsey smashing against the Otranto's sides. Each time wave after wave of men jumped for their lives. Many fell between the ships and were crushed or drowned. When the Mounsey was overcrowded and left, about 400 men were still left on the Otranto. They swam for their lives, but only 16 made it to shore.
