Walter served in the Spanish-American War.

He is buried with his wife and her parents, behind the trio of hemlocks near the top of the hill, between the hairpin Turn on Washington St. and above Tenth Street.

His parents and siblings are buried atop a knoll next to the cemetery chapel.

Most of the rest of his Smith family is along Washington Street: His uncle Henry's family is in the hairpin above this spot, along this same side of Washington Street. His grandmother, Mary Smith Miller, and her husband William are buried at the lower end of Washington Street, by the entrance. His uncle John Sr. is in an unmarked grave also along Washington Street, around Ninth Street, in the next section down. His aunt Louise Smith Schlaubach also is in an unmarked grave, also in the same section as this Walter and his wife.
