Louis was born Ludwig Wilhelm Schmidt in Cincinnati, about a month after his father died of cholera and a year after a sister Katharina had died.

His full birth date -- that differs from the year on his tombstone -- comes from his German language baptismal record at German St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church that then was at 6th and Lodge streets in Cincinnati. (The congregation later moved to what now is the St. John's Unitarian Church at 12th and Elm. Records from the 1839+ German congregation are available online at FamilySearch, film # 007857128. Ludwig/Louis' baptismal record citing his July birth date and his Oct. 1849 baptism is image # 189.)

Louis' mother Maria/Mary Gernand Schmidt then remarried in August 1850 to Wilhelm/William Mueller/Miller, who had been one of Louis' baptismal sponsors. The couple brought infant Louis and his three older surviving siblings, ages 9 to 5, to Marietta and then had a son, William, of their own in 1851.

Those parents are buried under a black stone in section 1 of Oak Grove, just inside the Washington Street gate, along the inner road parallel to Eighth Street. All of his siblings share the same cemetery, but are scattered. Half-brother William's grave is the nearest to his, just below the lower berm from this one that is atop the knoll overlooking it.

Shortly after the death of his mother, Mary Miller, Louis sued his older sister, Louise Schlaubach, over final handling of their mother's estate. Other siblings were listed as joining, but the exact issues and positions were not detailed in the limited court record. However, it did report that a jury trial settled the case in favor of Louise. (See Louise's memorial for details.)

Louis Smith, as he was called after the mid-1800s, was
husband of Magdalena Braun Smith

In addition to the children linked, below, who are mostly buried in the family plot with them, they were parents of Charles "Charley" Foster Smith (born 1879).

Son Walter's wife, born Hazel Cone, lived a handful of doors away from Walter and his parents in 1900 Warren Township, according to the census. Hazel Cone Smith died in Wood County, WV. They are buried in Oak Grove, too, but along Washington Street, by a cedar tree.

page 1139-1140 of History of Marietta and Washington County, Ohio, Vol. 2, by Seymour J. Hathaway.:

"Mrs. Magdalena Smith, whose wide circle of acquaintances and friends testifies to her goodness and popularity, is a woman of kindly impulses and generous disposition. She is a native of Germany, where she lived until 1874, when she came to the United States, and soon afterward located in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio.

"While still living in that city she became acquainted with Lewis W. Smith, whom she married some time later. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1849, and during his life was all that a good husband should be. For a considerable time he was the owner and manager of a planing mill in Marietta, which he sold to James Foreman and James Hall, and purchased the farm on which Mrs. Smith now lives. In 1892, they settled on this farm, and here they reared three children; namely, Walter G., Charles F. and May M.

"Mr. Smith departed to his final rest on April 23, 1901, and was mourned by the citizens of Warren township, as a good, useful citizen is always mourned. His portrait accompanies this sketch. On the farm of Mrs. Smith are now several producing oil wells. It is located about four miles out on the river road from Marietta, and is well cared for under the direction of Mrs. Smith, whose judgment and good common sense can always be counted upon."
