at New Masonic Home

Joseph Hans Nelson, 61, for years prominent in Masonic lodge circles, and well known mining man in Utah and Nevada, died at his home here Monday morning at 6:35 o'clock.
Mr Nelson's death came as a shock to his family and friends. After the automobile accident March 9 in Salt Creek canyon, in which he was badly injured, he was critically ill for several weeks, but recently he had seemed to be regaining his health. Only Sunday he had taken his usual walk to the Masonic hall. He was stricken with a severe pain at six o'clock Monday morning. His wife immediately called a doctor, but he passed away about twenty minutes after the doctor arrived. Apparently a blood clot resulting from the injuries he received in the accident reached his heart. His wife and son were at his bedside when he passed away. His daughter Nial, who was in Salt Lake at the time, came home immediately after receiving word of her father's death.
Joseph Hans Nelson was born at Richfield December 16, 1876, a son of Augustinus and Anne E Nelson, Richfield pioneers of 1864. His marriage to Eliza Dall took place at Richfield December 30, 1896, and she with one daughter, Nial Nelson, and one son, Rehnon D survives. Surviving also are a sister, Mrs Rinda Dormitzer of Los Angeles, and a brother, L Roy Nelson of Salt Lake City.

Mr Nelson was a charter and life member of Hiram lodge No 12, F & A M of Richfield. He was a past master of the lodge, having served in this capacity two terms, and had the pleasure of seeing his son made the present master of the lodge. He was the first worthy patron of Gloria chaper, O E S, of Richfield, and at the time of his death was associated patron of the chapter. He held the 32 degree, Knights Commander of the Court of Honor, in the Utah consistory of Scottish Rite Masons. He was a Shriner, member of El Kalah Temple, in which he was an aide to the potentate; was junior grand warden and district deputy grand lecturer of Grand Lodge, F & A M of Utah at the time of his death. In the recent establishment of the new Masonic hall in Richfield he realized a long cherished dream. Although his illness came just at a time when the lodge acquired the property he was one of the members most active in making possible its acquisition and development.
As a young man Mr Nelson was director of a band and orchestra, and was president of the organization that built the old Star pavilion at Richfield, the Utahna at Provo, and other dance halls in southern Utah.
His mining activities covered a wide territory in Utah and Nevada, but he was especially active in the early development of Kimberly and in the Marysvale mining district.
Mr Nelson was for years a member of the Sevier County Republican committee.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 pm
